WiMAX Development in Asia November 24-30

- Following the investment of NT$386 million (US$11.59 million; US$1=NT$33.31) from Intel, Taiwanese WiMAX licensee Vmax Telecom is expected to receive an additional NT$1.0 billion (US$30.02 million) injection from Tecom, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency. Vmax is a joint venture between Tecom, Vibo Telecom, and Teco Group. With the additional investment, Tecom will be able to hold a 37.95% stake in Vmax. Vmax expects to commence WiMAX services in northern Taiwan at the end of the first quarter of 2009.

- Malaysia's YTL e-Solutions plans to launch its WiMAX network in peninsular Malaysia in the fourth quarter of 2009 via collaboration with Cisco Services Malaysia, Malaysia Star reported on November 28. Cisco will build and integrate YTLe's WiMAX core network. YTLe subsidiary Y-Max Networks has already begun providing WiMAX services on a limited scale in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

- Motorola has deployed its first WiMAX 802.16e trial network for VDC (Vietnam Datacommunications Company) in Vietnam, according to a press release by Motorola on November 26. VDC is a unit under Vietnamese Internet service provider VNPT (Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group). The trial network is part of an agreement signed in 2007 between VDC and Motorola to conduct WiMAX trials in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
